Habitat: an open digital backbone

We are developing and designing the architecture of an open-source platform for domestic support and research, to be realised as Habitat.

Three connected responsibilities

Support everyday life

A local interaction layer is intended to connect smart-home and assistive functions. The platform abstract describes Home Assistant as a possible foundation.

Give data context

A separate interoperability and governance layer is intended to map device and context data to appropriate HL7 FHIR resources. A technical observation does not thereby become a clinical finding.

Support research

Sessions, metadata, consent-aware workflows and pseudonymised exports are intended to support configurable Living Lab studies. Home automation and sensitive research data require distinct responsibilities.

Evidence-informed, vendor-neutral packages

Packages are planned around a support question, such as moving through the home at night. The purpose, supporting literature, required device capabilities, data and evaluation conditions should be described before a particular product is selected.

Local processing, data minimisation and reviewable permissions are design goals. A package’s effectiveness must be assessed for its specific use; it does not follow merely from choosing a sensor or data standard.

Collaboration

We welcome collaboration on open interfaces, understandable study workflows, privacy, accessible interaction and validation of individual packages. Open source is the development intention; each release needs an explicit licence.
